This was (before Dutch Elm disease) when Lawndale was framed by mature elm trees planted on each side of the street that exquistitely filtered the western sunlight through their leaves in the late afternoons, creating a magical golden arcade.

The neighborhood was safe. We played outside until our mothers called us in for dinner.

Almost all of the residents had kids who went to Haugan School. There was a huge parade of little ones going to and from school every day. On the first day of kindergarten, my mother said, "I'm sorry, I won't be able to take you to school because I have to go....(somewhere)...but maybe you could go with...(somebody)..." But proud to be "big" enough to go to school, I said, "That's OK. I can go by myself" "Well how will you know where the school is?" she asked. I looked at her incredulous. "I'll follow the other kids." (Duh!)

Sadie K. Kalmon terrified the kids and I must admit, my hands grew cold and my heartbeat increased when I saw her coming towards me but for some reason, she liked me and never gave me a hard time.

We did get a good education and learned good manners which served us well later on.

Thank you for you text and pictures. lovely to look at, delightful to see.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33543511.post-39263099247304523402008-06-09T18:28:00.000-05:002008-06-09T18:28:00.000-05:00Loved your comments on Albany Park. The principal at that time was Sadie K. Kalmon who struck terror in every student's heart when we saw her striding down the hall in her fur coat. The art teacher, Mrs. Prignano, was extraordinarily inventive and had her students creating large scale murals depicting the story of the first Thanksgiving and numerous other wonderful art projects. The librarian managed to arrange for programs with famous authors like Albert Payton Terhune (Lad, a Dog) and Dr. Seuss that I'll never forget. Jensen Park also features large in my memories, particularly the annual Halloween costume contest sponsored by the Haugen Fathers Council. Thanks for sharing your memories with us.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33543511.post-55763102333178604482008-01-10T23:37:00.001-06:002008-01-10T23:37:00.001-06:00How wonderful it is to read such nostalgia. I just spoke to a friend of mine I met in 3rd grade and we agreed that we have no desire to attend our high school graduation, but to see the people from Haugen again would be so grand. To this day, I never did find someone who knew the term pinners, although by my decade we played it differently from the way you describe it. After speaking with my friend and seeing this blog, I'm just full of smiles. I will never forget my days at Haugen.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33543511.post-61002470772610404522008-01-10T23:37:00.000-06:002008-01-10T23:37:00.000-06:00How wonderful it is to read such nostalgia. I now live in the suburbs of NYC. My son who is 6 years old is playing a wall ball type game on his school's playground. I asked him if they called it pinners and he looked at me like I had 3 heads. I have so many great memories of playing pinners, the game mentioned in this site, during my youth.

I assumed that the entire US knew what pinners was, but after googling "pinners" it looks like it is a Chicago only term (like "gym shoes").

Well, thanks for bringing back some good memories!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33543511.post-34041183546928202542007-10-23T16:54:00.000-05:002007-10-23T16:54:00.000-05:00I lived in Albany Park from 67 to 73 by Kedzie and...I lived in Albany Park from 67 to 73 by Kedzie and Argyle. Went to Hibbard school, Von Steuben upper grade center and Von Steuben high school for two years before we moved to the western suburbs. You're
right, there were alot of good friends and good times. It was a place were people were busy trying to make it by working hard. When I'm in the city I go by and check out some of the new people and the new businesses. While it's new to me it's still the old neighborhood. I hope all my old friend are safe where ever they maybe.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33543511.post-57108686517105343862007-07-31T18:04:00.000-05:002007-07-31T18:04:00.000-05:00Interesting look back.Interesting look back.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33543511.post-50871279193102457632007-07-31T07:29:00.000-05:002007-07-31T07:29:00.000-05:00Beautiful post. There used to be a fantastic bagel bakery on Kedzie near Montrose. Although Albany Park couldn't compete with Uptown in the category of scary hillbilly and Indian bars.Joehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09747874295331152779noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33543511.post-55916497951386976082007-07-31T07:14:00.000-05:002007-07-31T07:14:00.000-05:00Great photos. Atlanta's a young city and doesn't maintain a sense of neighborhood, so we have very few areas that look like this (mine does!). We have definitely earned the name "McCity."Cuphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00306848986781193911noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33543511.post-25303521342120052072007-07-31T00:39:00.000-05:002007-07-31T00:39:00.000-05:00Nice.We lived just around the corner from your old...Nice.

We lived just around the corner from your old place, on the corner of Lawndale and Leland.Splotchyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15427992716600704581noreply@blogger.com
