Why We Blog

A couple of months ago, there was a great discussion about blogging on Barbara's blog about the nature of bloggers and blogging-- specifically, refuting the idea that bloggers tend to be isolated, misanthropic people.

Since that post, I've mulled a post about "Why We Blog."

A couple of months ago, Kathy, the wife of one of my closest friends, Tim, started blogging. Her blog is almost a diametric opposite of mine; where I'm verbose, she is spare. I post nearly every day, she posts every few days. I love using illustrations, she uses none. Her blog is elegant and reflects her background in literature, as well as a wide breadth of interests.

A couple of days ago she explained way better than I would ever had done (and with greater brevity than I could ever muster), the place blogging takes in our lives. I hope anyone who reads this will take a moment and read this.

  1. It's a good one. There are a lot of dissatisfied souls out there who need the stimulation. But be vareful what you write - you never know who is listening in!

  2. That's a big part of it for me. Another part is that, since I left Chicago and my closest friends, I have fewer opportunities to try and crack people up. My blog has sort of filled that void.

  3. Another thing I meant to add is that, to a person, all the bloggers I know or have met in person are social people. None of them are isolated or hyper-introverted.

  4. Hey, thanks Johnny. I would never have imagined myself blogging, but somehow it happened. It's a weird, complicated blogosphere we inhabit, though. . .

  5. This is where I get to talk to people, read what others think, find out what is going on in lives of others that I never would have known. It's a nice way of expanding the community, plus it is done at my leasure (sp?)

  6. It's fun to connect with new people, find out about them through their writings/jokes/babbling (whichever it may be).

I have enjoyed meeting almost everyone out here.

  7. A pensieve - that's quite an apt analogy, except for the fact that you tend bring in just as much again (probably more) from other people's blogs as you let go with your own.

I sometimes feel slightly guilty about the amount of time I spend blogging, but it really has enriched my life, so to hell with that other stuff that doesn't get done.

  8. I'd say that I still do it just for the exercise of trying to be at least remotely creative on a daily basis, and it's become a pretty habitual thing, and the folks I've met are fun to exchange comments and ideas with.

  9. I blog for one reason only: To write. I promised myself I'd blog for one year straight and post every day. I missed a few days here and there. Some 350 posts and my blog birthday in sight.

  10. You mean not everyone blogs just to find a girlfriend like Chris?

  12. But, but but...I am misanthropic and isolated!

  13. Great post Johnny. I think that lots of us are just driven to connect with other people--in person, or in writing.

  14. I went over and couldn't agree more with the truth of that analogy. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

    Have a great weekend.
