Sunday Morning

Got up this morning, put on The Velvet Underground's song "Sunday Morning", then The Rolling Stones' Exile On Mainstreet album-- because, you know, sometimes a guy's just gotta hear Exile On Main Street-- sat down to a hearty, healthy breakfast, and reflected on yesterday.

I worked a double yesterday. The lunch shift was great, the dinner shift even better, despite the fact that one of the sous chefs didn't show up. I made an insane amount of money. I'm working another double today-- it should be a shorter one.

While I've been away at work, it seems that the President has gone back to using Vietnam as an analogy for Iraq, like he was a few months ago. A lot of you think this is bad news. No-- Vietnam's a great analogy: the U.S. propping up a corrupt, incompetent government that won't come to terms with the opposition, knowing that the U.S. President will continue to feed U.S. soldiers into the meatgrinder to support the government-in-name-only in order to avoid admitting that he was wrong about the entire escapade-- yep, that sounds about right to me.

In the meantime, perhaps we should be planning the Iraq War Memorial.

I also saw the headline that housing prices are doing what everyone said couldn't possibly happen-- they're actually dropping.

Are you better off today than you were eight years ago?

My god, I hate these people.

I start my Biology class at 8 am tomorrow. I was worried about where I was going to get the time to run out and get a spiral notebook for my class-- I'd forgotten to get one this week. I didn't need to worry-- my stepdaughter got me one yesterday. I've got great kids.

Housing prices are dropping? The real estate boom is over? But, bubbles can't burst, can they? Bubbles can't burst!

A fan-freaking-tastic album. Saw some of the Brian Jones movie, Stoned, and found it pretty wretched. His whole life story -- and the Stones -- would be a lot more compelling.

Exile is endlessly good to listen to -- a swamp of an album. Here's to the VU, your new class, job, and falling housing prices. Maybe that's why my landlord says he's not raising rent.

p.s. and right on re: Vietnam and the Bush-Cheney idiocracy.

I hope Bio is going well. By my watch you are 45 minutes into it now.

You do have great kids when they remember to pick up school supplies for you!

Take heart, johnny, it won't be that much longer you have to tote this wretched, woefully inept conservative load and then it will be happy days are here again. So look to the future and don't get too bogged down with the now. I look forward to reading your blog when you are in political bliss.

Whenever someone mentions Iraq in the same breath as Vietnam I immediately imagine the scenario you just wrote. Well done.

As for the job, I'm glad it's still good. As for biology, good luck!

Does Adam keep you updated on the BushCo happenings while you're at school?

No. We are definitely not better off. Thanks to a long period of unemployment for Mr. Ten S, we have no savings and are struggling to get out of debt. He makes less money now than he did eight years ago. Doesn't sound like better to me.

I was listening to "Sunday Morning" on my bike ride yesterday!

House prices have dropped slightly here in Bloomington. Maybe I can finally stop renting!

Did you see John Murthas response to Bush's comparison with Viet Nam?

August 22, 2007 -- (Washington D.C.)- Congressman John P. Murtha, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, issued the following statement in response to the President’s Speech today before the Veterans of Foreign Wars:

President Johnson said in 1966, "the solution to Vietnam is patience."

President Nixon said in 1969, "As our commanders in the field determine that the South Vietnamese are able to assume a greater portion of the responsibility for the defense of their own territory, troops will come back."

Today, we hear the same misleading rhetoric coming from this Administration. In Vietnam, we were talking about 10 years of patience and in the end a U.S. military solution did not work. Now, five year’s into the war in Iraq, the President continues to seek a U.S. military solution to an Iraqi civil war. There will be no real progress in Iraq until key political, economic and diplomatic improvements are made by the Iraqi’s.

The facts on the ground in Iraq indicate that electricity is below pre-war levels (only 2 hours a day in Baghdad), oil production remains below pre-war production and at least 50% of the Iraqi population is unemployed.

All Americans realize that stability in the Middle East is important to our national security. The American people will not accept patience as a strategy while the Iraqi Government continues to ignore key political and economic benchmarks.

I love VU on Sunday mornings.

And I'll love it when January 2009 rolls around.

Good luck with biology!

Thanks for summing up the last seven years.

I've heard other middle-class folks say, "My stock portfolio seems to be increasing in value." My reaction, "Too bad the dollar isn't what it used to be." Good luck with those college courses.

Good luck with the new classes, glad you had a few moments in the chaos to listen to a bit of good music and relax a bit.
