One For Splotchy, One For Bubs

In running around today, I snapped a couple of pictures of signs in Chicago.

This is the sign for the shuttered Stars Motel on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. I'm pretty sure that Splotchy alluded to this sign in a post.

I love old signs in general (although regular readers may recall that some crank labelled a picture I posted of an old diner sign "pedantic"). Lincoln Avenue, a diagonal street that runs north and west across the north side of Chicago, once had many of these motels. I've never heard a satisfactory explanation as to why there were so many along Lincoln Avenue. Over time, they became centers of prostitution, and the city has been acquiring them by eminent domain and building new police stations, fire stations and parks in the spots.

The other thing I snapped a picture of is the statue at the top of Super Dawg, a northwest side Chicago institution, at Milwaukee and Devon avenues. The couple that own Super Dawg were regulars of mine at Nida's, a barbecue place I worked at years ago. The hot dog couple on top of the place are popular landmarks-- Bubs has mentioned them before.

Cool. Weinermen. The kind that get knocked over when they run around bases in baseball games.

IF you get over to the Gary area, don't miss the Y&W Driveinn ruins and ruined signs. They were there 8 or so years ago, not sure if they are there now.

Let's just say, staying at The Stars was an experience. It was straight out of a 70's porno. I'm sure there must have been cameras hidden in every room.

Those are the craziest looking weiner statues I have ever seen, especially the one in the Fred Flintstone costume. What's the story there?

Oh, man, you need to post a picture of the Superdawg statues at night-- for those of you who don't know, their eyes glow red!

Old signs are the best, a glimpse into another gone world. If that's pedantic, I'm the Pope of Greenwich Village.

That half mile square area held all things good to me as a child. Super Dawg, the minature golf course and Cock Robin. I would pay good money for the Cock Robin cone that had three flavors of sherbet. In the summer, that was the best. We also frequented the Dairy Queen at Canfield and Devon. We had a choice after yard work on Saturdays of getting ice cream from the Good Humor truck or going to Dairy Queen.

There are a lot of old signs like that in Denver along Colfax avenue. Colfax has the distinction of being the longest continuous street in the USA, and now has a marathon run on it.

The reason it is so long and has so many old hotels and eating places is it was also highway 40 that carried all of the traffic through Denver going east/west across Colorado.

Thus ends todays history lesson...

For some reason, I always get turned on when I see the dancing hot dogs.

Thanks for posting the Stars sign pic! I'm actually surprised it's still standing. I had thought the new owner of the Stars had sold it. He indicated to me he had gotten $102.50 for it on eBay, and that was back in June, 2006.

Maybe they just haven't carted it away yet.

And love the Superdawg wienies. How could you not?

Thank you for the weiners and the motel sign! Of course, one of the swellest features of the big weiners is their blinking light eyes that you can see at night.
