On Friday night, after the blogger extravaganza, I came home and Army of Darkness was on American Movie Classics. I watched the last half hour or so of it, despite the fact that it's on my Netflix queue.
A couple of thoughts. First, I liked it a lot better than the first movie, The Evil Dead (I haven't seen the second one), and look forward to seeing the whole movie. I thought Army of Darkness was pretty damned funny. The second thought was wondering what percentage of people who saw it got the joke about the magic words at the end-- "Klaatu barada nikto"-- that they were the words said to Gort the robot in The Day the Earth Stood Still.

I totally knew that. That phrase is also used quite a bit in the play "The Foreigner."
I got it, but I'm a movie nerd...although I doubt many fans of the film aren't, it's not exactly a mainstream film by any means.
I'd love to see some puzzled Spiderman Trilogy fans stumbling onto this..."Ooh, it's from the same director, let's watch!"
"What the hell's a boomstick? What are we watching?!?"
I still have yet to see the first Evil Dead movie. My wife assures me it pales in comparison with Evil Dead 2 (she tells me the plots are virtually identical as well).
The thing that amazed me about Army of Darkness was how, on probably a very small budget, they really made a vast skeleton army that Ash had to fight. I was really impressed.
I got the Klaatu reference. Those words pop up quite a bit in pop culture, I think. My favorite part of Army of Darkness was when Ash was supposed to recite the words, but couldn't exactly remember them, so just mumbled, hoping the horrible supernatural forces would be kept at bay because he *might* have said the right words. Very funny.
I just snapped a copy of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Speaking of, Thursday is the 50th anniversary of Sputnik I!
Ah, yes. I still say Evil Dead II was better than Army of Darkness, but that's just me. Army of Darkness gave me one of my favorite lines, which I use frequently:
"All right you primitive screwheads, listen up!"
It is blasphemous that you have never seen Evil Dead II.
Erik reminded me of something I need to write about Sputnik!
Klaatu barada necktie?
Great movie. The mumbling scene was one of my favorites, too.
Hail to the king, baby.
Why pick between Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness? They're both great!
Now, gimme some sugar, baby!
I Netflixed all three some time last year and have a sci-fi fest. I recognized the words from TDTESS and also - Fox Mulder has that sign in his office!
