Occasional Forgotten Video-Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend"
This one is from 1992. Back in the day, WXRT's morning dj Lin Bremer used to introduce this one by saying "Whenever I'm having a rough day, I lean my face up against the speaker and turn this one up real loud."
I love this vid, with the animation cadged from some anime. The song itself is old school, proving that contrary to popular belief, the face-blistering guitar solo isn't dead. The album cover was pretty nice too, featuring a picture of a young Tuesday Weld.
In my wildest rock and roll fantasy, I'm playing drums on that cut. But since I have no idea how to play drums, I have to settle for air drums. Every single time I hear it.

I never saw this video, and had no idea what song you were talking about--then I heard this and remembered. There's a huge gap in my music history from the early to late 90's when I didn't really buy much music or listen to much radio. And of course, it was pre-interwebs, so no downloading.
Thanks for posting this.
Good lord thank you for this! I totally forgot about Mr. Sweet, and I used to love him. I am going to find my old Girlfriend CD and get it into my iTunes library asap and get it back into my musical orbit.
I have never played air guitar, but am a huge air drum player! Loved this...
Ask me sometime, and I'll tell you why Matthew Sweet is such a cool guy.
The last time I saw Matthew Sweet in concert, he played this song about 30 times faster than usual, like he just wanted it over with. Girlfriend is an almost perfect album; it must be hard to know you'll never be able to top one of your earliest successes.
lemme tell you about this song. a friend and i used it in one of our films when we were at columbia. it was a good film. it is one i don't have a copy of which makes me sad. (we also used heart and soul by huey lewis...)
Anime video mash up's make me pee with giddy delight.
Monica told me to check you out.
So here I am.
Groovy, indeed. And Tuesday Weld, yeah man. Looks like her most recent film was Chelsea Walls, which is mixed overall, but she's good in it. And then there was the old I Walk the Line. . .
I am so totally pinching this idea for a slow blog day!!
and, WHIGWHAM! I've not heard this song in a dogs age!!
"Girlfriend" makes Evil Geniuses happy.
