The "Everything is Broken" Random Ten
Broken hands on broken ploughs,
Broken treaties, broken vows,
Broken pipes, broken tools,
People bending broken rules.
Hound dog howling, bull frog croaking,
Everything is broken.
--Bob Dylan, "Everything is Broken."
A water main in front of my house broke over a week ago, and our yard, and then our block have slowly turned into an ice rink. I'd provide a picture of the actual yard, but the picture is in my laptop, which was broken-- the cord from the computer to the screen was broken, and it's in the shop. It's a problem most of the Ibook G3's had.
This morning, I went to drive in to work, and my car would not exit second gear. I turned back and drove it to the shop. I hope it's not too expensive.
I hopped on the bus to go to work. Good luck-- I only waited a couple of minutes for the two buses I had to take. I popped on my earphones and set my ipod to shuffle. When I got off the bus, I accidently shut of my ipod-- I couldn't click back through the songs. Had to do another shuffle:
1. Penthouse and Pavement- Heaven 17
2. Positively 4th Street- Lucinda Williams
3. Girls Like Me- Bonnie Hayes
4. Stormy Monday- The Alllman Brothers Band
5. Hard Travelin'- Ramblin' Jack Elliot
6. Song of a Soldier- Phil Ochs
7. Do You Remember When- J. Geils Band
8. Feed the Trees- Belly
9. Is It Like Today?- World Party
10. Sons and Daughters- The Decemberists
I just got a call from the computer repair shop. My computer was only $200 to fix. With a little luck, my Blazer will be fixed by this evening and I can run up to Evanston and get my laptop tommorrow.
And you'll notice the Decemberists-- I had the chance to put my new copy of "The Crane Wife" on my ipod before I ran my computer to the shop. Thanks to those who recommended it-- I'm enjoying it a lot.

I think things are wonky for everyone lately. Hope the rest of the day goes smoothly. Yikes.
I need to take my laptop in for repair, do you like the place you took yours too, or is it for Macs only? I would rather take mine somewhere that someone recommended.
Nabih's, in Evanston, only does Mac's, I think.
Come home broken man, I will fix you.
I know what you mean, I felt that way when we were coming home from Minnesota and the car was so broken, and the girl was all sick and broken.
From here on in, it should be smooth sailing...as long as it isn't across that ice! The Decemberists in February is a good thing JY!
Amy is right, it's been a broken week. But I think we've made it. One of our cars started making a horrible noise Wednesday, I got it into the shop Friday morning and it turned out a sparkplug had worked loose and the mechanic said we were lucky the front end of the car didn't go up in flames. Which would've been pretty dramatic.
Our eldest loves the Decembrists, I have to give them a listen.
Tiki Terrace, 1 S. Wolf Rd, Prospect Heights, Friday, Feb 23 any time after 6:30PM
I want to name my first-born grandchild "the Decemberists", that's how much I love them.
Have you pissed off the karma keepers by any chance? That's what I always wonder about myself when everything breaks down at once.
Here's hoping that they heal soon.
I really like that Belly song; and all other songs by Belly, too.
Amy-
Yeah, this weather's just beating everybody down.
By the end of the day, things were definitely better.
Lu-
I stand corrected-- when I picked my ibook up this morning, they told me they do work on pc's and laptops, but not for warranty work.
Kim-
Yeah, that was the longest trip in the world, wasn't it? I didn't dare say "what else can go wrong," because I was afraid something else would.
Dale-
You must have had some influence, because by the end of the day, everything was tidied up. Thanks!
Bubs-
Yikes! I'm glad that they caught that problem before there was a disaster!
I've been digging them-- it's like the Pogues were hanging out with Fairport Convention. Very enjoyable.
See you next Friday!
Barbara-
I must have fixed whatever I did to them, because things were much better by the end of the day.
I'm curious about their (the Decemberist's) older stuff now and look forward delving into it.
Todd-
Feed the Trees is one of those rare songs that grabbed me the first time I heard it, and I still love it.
