You Were Warned...

Just a warning... May is National Mime Month.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Just cover your eyes and everything will be OK.

Last year I taught a senior elective in creative writing. My favorite story involved a group of kids pistol-whipping a mime in front of a 7-11.

I kind of like their spunk. Most people hate them but they plug on, seemingly oblivious to the outside world.

What I hate are clowns. Mean looking clowns. Pennywise type clowns. I hope their is no clown month.

Who comes up with these national monthly themes, and why do you know about them?

The mime is certianly an interesting commitment for one to take on, considering how universally reviled they seem to be.

Do they really need a whole month to get out of that invisible box? That seems excessive, they should get a week, tops.

I am stunned into silence.

You evil, evil man. I'm impressed.

By the way, did you ever see the movie Shakes the Clown? The clowns hung out in a clown bar called the Twisted Balloon, and they'd get drunk and go beat up mimes.

Well, which is more evil, a mime or a clown?

I'd post a comment but I'm silently stuck in this box right now.

If a mime gets pistol-whipped in front of a 7-11 and there are no witnesses, does it make a sound?

One of my younger sisters best friend's father is a mime. I always found that kind of awesome.

This clinches it - I am not getting out of bed during May.

TenS-
Thanks for the advice!

Lu-
Remember years ago when Bloom County spoofed the Bernard Goetz incident by having Opus the Penguin beating an offending mime with a salami?

Busterp-
In the mid-eighties, my parents were living in San Jose. When I visited, we'd go to San Francisco. I don't know who were more obnoxious panhandlers-- the breakdancers or the mimes.

I read an interview with a clown years ago, complaining that Gacy had ruined clowns for everyone. I think clowns did that themselves.

Cheer34-
I don't know! I do like one of them, though: National "Talk Like a Pirate Day," September 19. I'm not making this up:

Mob-
Have you ever seen Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie?" There's a great scene with the late, great mime Marcel Marceau, where the producers of the silent movie call Marceau to ask him to be in their movie. After struggling to get out of his box, and against a fierce imaginary wind to get to the telephone, he Ironically has the only line in the movie, which is, of course, "No!"

Flannery-
Mimes have that effect.

Skyler's Dad-
Let me know when you hit the border of that invisible box...

Bubs-
I do my best!

Kristi-
I think the mimes will let you out in Two Minutes.

There's a security firm here in Chicago called "Avante Guard Security." I've always pictured them sending out a couple of mimes in guard uniforms to answer alarms. I guess I'm just a warped guy.

Deadspot-
Those are the questions that keep me up nights, too. That, and "where the hell did I put my car keys?"

Natalie-
I won't hold it against him....

LOL, Silent Movie, wow that's been years since I've seen that one! Great stuff!

I wonder what a month like this would be like in France, where mime's are actually respected. It'd be mass hysteria.
