Something Cool: Space Junk

While clearing out the kitchen today for the upcoming renovation, I grabbed a newspaper clipping I'd had taped up above my Powerbook for ages, and thought to share it.

Heavens Above is a site that tells you when orbiting things that are visible from terra firma will be visible at your particular location. You can register, and it stores your settings, or log in anonymously.

Apparently, you can see the International Space Station on occasion, but one of the most dazzling displays are the flares of the Iridium satellites-- an initially failed satellite mobile phone service from the nineties that was bought in bankruptcy, revived, and is again in service.

But if you can't wait for the next passing bright satellite to pass by in the night, here's another brilliant star seen frequently at night, Lou Reed, with Satellite of Love.

One of my favorite past times at the summer cottage in the Michigan woods is sitting by the lake and watching the satelites go over. Especially good viewing this week as the moon rise was very late...

Lou Reed.. one the best voices ever. Not a bad film presence either. He had a small bit part (as himself) in Blue in the Face along with Jim Jarmusch amongst many others. Great little indy comedy.

Elk-
We've got to take you up on your long-standing invite to the cabin soon, and bring our telescope-- a couple of years ago, I got Adam one of those fancy, big telescopes with the computer that tracks things. I'll bet we can see cool stuff up there, away from the city lights.

MacGuff-
Yeah, he's great. Great guitar player as well.

Bubs-
Given his content matter-- freaks, drug addicts, perverts-- man, he should do the soundtrack for your blog-- a lot of people forget that he has written some beautiful songs: Satellite of Love, of course, as well as Sunday Morning, and his tribute to his friend Andy Warhol, "Nobody Like You."

Very cool stuff -- I used to live in the country and could trace orbiting space junk. It's pretty cool to see, for sure. Humbling and inspiring.
